Undercooked & Overpriced: Mercedes-Benz S600

It seems as those Mercedes-Benz was a little too eager to get the S600 out of the factory and onto dealership floors. Not only is the 5.5 Liter, 36-Valve, Bi-Turbo V12 engine a leftover from the previous generation W220 S-Class, it's mated to what appears to be the same old 5-speed auto shifter.

Just a little hasty?

Using MBUSA's own vehicle comparison guide, the benefits of purchasing a 2007 S600 over a 2007 S500 just do not exist.

Both have 5.5 Liter, big bloc engines with sportscar rated performance. There's only a second difference between the two sedan's 0-60 times (4.5 versus 5.4 on the S600 and S500, respectively). And while I'm sure that difference opens up past the century mark- few buyers will really care.

The S500 even sports the more advanced 7-speed transmission. And every standard feature that is available on the S600 is available as an option on the less expensive S500.

Additionally, there is $54,000 to be saved by purchasing the S500; almost enough to park an off-lease SL500 next to the new S-Class in the garage.

So who will want the new S600? The same people who bought the last one; they enjoy driving the best and would appreciate it if the world took notice. Except in the present circumstances - their claim to fame is dubious.
