"We have had positive discussions so far with Ford concerning the possible purchase of Jaguar/Land Rover and we are now entering a period of more focused and detailed negotiations," a spokesman said in a statement. "We are pleased by the progress in the discussions to date and very positive about the prospects of this business going forward," the statement said.

The statement from Tata said the discussions were complex.

"We hope both parties can reach an agreement in the forthcoming weeks, though these are complex discussions and there is still much work that needs to be done before that position is reached," it said.

Tata is India's leading producer of commercial vehicles and No. 2 in India for passenger cars.

In 2006 it built 580,000 vehicles, of which 54,000 were exported. Acquiring Jaguar Land Rover is part of an ambitious expansion program aimed at making Tata a major player in the global auto industry.

Ford Motor Co. on Thursday told Jaguar and Land Rover workers that it is in "focused negotiations" to sell the brands to India's Tata Motors.

Ford of Europe Chairman Lewis Booth said in a statement: "Ford is committed to focused negotiations at a more detailed level with Tata Motors concerning the potential sale of the combined Jaguar Land Rover business."

Booth added: "We will proceed with further substantive discussions with Tata Motors over the forthcoming weeks with a view to securing an agreement that is in the best interests of all parties concerned."

Ford put Jaguar, a sports-car maker, and Land Rover, which makes SUVs, up for sale in June.

Booth's statement is the first time Ford has revealed the identity of potential buyers for the brands.

Tata will now gain access to more in-depth financial information on the two companies, which will allow it to adjust its eventual offer to Ford.

Tata said on Thursday it was pleased with the progress in talks with Ford.

General Motors has canceled plans to build a new advanced double overhead-cam V8 for its luxury cars.

The move means the future for Cadillac's V8 car engines is unclear.

In January 2007, GM said it would invest $300 million in its Tonawanda, N.Y., engine plant for the new V8 engine, which was scheduled to start production in 2009 and be used in luxury cars.

GM Powertrain spokesman Tom Read said Thursday that the project is dead. That engine likely would have replaced Cadillac's long-running Northstar V8, which is scheduled to end production in 2010.

Cadillac could switch to high-powered V6s in its cars, except for the Corvette-based XLR.

The new direct-injected V6 in the 2008 CTS develops 304 hp, while the current Northstar V8 makes 275 hp in the 2008 DTS.

Cadillac spokesman Kevin Smith said, "We've really seen the V-6 become the predominant engine in sales on the (2008) STS because it's so close in power to the V-8."

He added that the V6 is about 150 to 200 pounds lighter.

The cancellation of the new V8 comes just days after President Bush signed into law new fuel economy standards that call for a 40 percent fuel economy improvement by 2020. The new standards start phasing in in 2011.

The Tonawanda plant still gets at least one new engine, an all-new 4.5-liter diesel V8 engine that starts production in 2010. That engine, GM said earlier, will be used in light pickups and SUVs

The effectiveness of the torque system is obvious immediately; the prototypes we drove were sharper in their actions than the standard X5 that BMW had on hand for comparison. By varying the degree of drive to either the left- or right-hand-side rear wheels, it cornered in a more neutral fashion and with greater purchase from the big Dunlop SP SportMax tires. The system is seamless and fast-acting. You don't notice it transferring the drive, but you do feel the benefit.

Body control is superb, and there are heightened levels of traction and grip. Comparisons with the arguably class-leading Porsche Cayenne will have to wait a few months, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the X6 shoot straight to the top of its class in dynamic prowess.

So, is it time to run out and order one? It's too early to be sure; our drive of the X6 was way too short to indicate with any certainty just how it will perform on the road. Rest assured, though, if you've placed an order on one in the hope of taking delivery of the finest-handling SUV on the market, you're not likely to be disappointed.

We were given a brief stint behind the wheel of a prototype X6 xDrive 35i on Michelin's test track in South Carolina, and it is clear that BMW is taking a big risk with its latest model.

The X6 is based on the same all-wheel-drive underpinnings as the second-generation X5, but the torque-vectoring system directs drive to where it can be used most effectively.

During understeer, the system automatically directs most of the drive to the rear wheels and loads the outside rear wheel, providing additional turning momentum beyond that generated by the steering. During oversteer, it essentially reverses the action, sending most of the drive to the front wheels and directing rear-wheel power mostly to the inside rear wheel.

For a big and heavy SUV (with an estimated 4600-pound curb weight), the six-cylinder X6 we tested provided a healthy dose of acceleration and was remarkably agile through tricky combinations of corners. Granted, we drove only on a circuit and under controlled conditions, but there's no getting away from it: The X6's handling sets new standards for a car this size. Perhaps more important is that it's an entertaining car from behind the steering wheel.

BMW designer Pierre Leclerq worked the styling to differentiate the X6 from the X5. Despite similarities to the X5 in the front and tall sides, every exterior panel is unique to the X6. The sloping roofline really provides it with its own distinctive identity. It angles down quite dramatically aft of the B-pillar in a manner that has prompted BMW to bill the four-door X6 as a Sport Activity Coupe rather than a Sport Activity Vehicle, as it does with the more conventional X5. Overall, the X6 is about one inch longer and two inches wider than the X5.nside, there's a sumptuously designed cabin based heavily on the X5, with a high-mounted dashboard and a broad center tunnel. The roof's curvature means there's no room for a third row of seats, leaving the new BMW with a reasonable 25.6 cubic feet of luggage capacity, rising to 59.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Safety is a big issue. The X6 gets front, side and curtain airbags, crash-activated headrests up front, bixenon headlamps and two-stage brake lamps. Added to this is a raft of driving aids, including the obligatory antilock brakes and a switchable dynamic stability control system.

Producing 400 hp at 5500 rpm along with 450 lb-ft of torque between 1800 rpm and 4500 rpm, the V8 delivers 50 more hp and 100 lb-ft of additional torque compared with the X5's naturally aspirated 4.8-liter V8. That's enough power to launch the X6 from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.3 seconds--faster than a 650i automatic--while giving it a top speed limited to 150 mph and a claimed combined fuel economy of 22 mpg.

The base model, starting at an estimated $60,000, gets a 3.0-liter, 300-hp, 300-lb-ft, twin-turbocharged inline-six-cylinder. An X6 hybrid is also under development, using the two-mode system that BMW, Mercedes-Benz and General Motors are working on in Troy, Michigan. All engines come mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

In a first for BMW, power is channeled through its existing xDrive all-wheel-drive system and a newly developed torque-vectoring device developed in partnership with German company ZF. The device sends torque front to rear and side to side. Suspension is double wishbone (front) and multilink (rear)

At the launch of the first X5 in 1999, it was evident that BMW had turned the sport/utility vehicle segment on its head. Here was a sweetly styled all-wheel-drive machine offering the driving experience, performance, refinement, luxury and technology of its cars.

Eight years later, the X5 has grown and matured, losing some of its predecessor's intrigue in the process. But BMW's determination to meld the attributes of a typical SUV with those of its other models continues with the new X6.

Revealed here in production guise for the first time before a planned world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the X6 represents BMW's attempt to marry a traditional coupe's sleekness and on-road dynamics with the visual bullishness and go-anywhere ability of an SUV.

The unusual styling, a combination of X5 and 6 Series design cues, was previewed in detail on the X6 concept car at the 2007 Frankfurt show last September ("Wild Thing," Sept. 17, 2007). The production version's only big changes are the addition of an exposed B-pillar and a 19-inch wheel-and-tire package that is standard on all U.S.-bound X6s.

The payback, however, could come quicker for consumers than if they bought a hybrid or a diesel. Kuzak said a diesel engine takes seven years to pay for itself, while a hybrid requires 12 years. The EcoBoost system should pay for itself in 30 months, he said.

Ford also plans to use EcoBoost on four cylinder engines. When used with a four-cylinder engine, EcoBoost will use only one turbocharger, said spokesman Said Deep. He said the 2009 MKS with EcoBoost will not be at the North American Internation Auto Show in Detroit, but a concept vehicle called the Explorer America, will have the system.

Another way Ford plans to boost fuel economy is by reducing weight. During a December Detroit auto show preview event with reporters, Kuzak said Ford's goal is reduce the weight of its vehicles between 250 and 750 pounds. He didn't say how Ford accomplish its goal or when the weight reductions would start.

"EcoBoost is meaningful because it can be applied across a wide variety of engine types in a range of vehicles, from small cars to large trucks," Kuzak said.

Ford has not said how much EcoBoost will cost consumers. But the technology is cutting edge, and it isn't cheap. The direct injection system sprays gasoline directly into each cylinder. To work with the turbocharger, direct injection requires a greater number of sensors, more software and a faster computer than a conventional engine.

Ford calls the system EcoBoost and claims it will deliver up to 20 percent better fuel economy.

Derrick Kuzak, Ford's group vice president of Global Product Development, says Ford will use EcoBoost on as many as 500,000 vehicles within the next five years.

The 2009 MKS will be available with an optional 3.5-liter V-6 EcoBoost engine that develops 340-horsepower. It will be an all-wheel drive sedan. Ford says fuel economy is improved by 2 mpg in the MKS with EcoBoost, while emissions are down 15 percent. Performance is about the same as a car with a 4.6-liter V-8. Ford expects higher fuel ecocnomy gains in vehicles that use smaller engines, such as the Focus.

Automakers are revamping their powertrain and future product plans to comply with stricter fuel economy regulations that require an automaker's fleet to average 35 mpg by 2020.
