Porsche's lone American factory driver, Patrick Long, will step up full-time from the American Le Mans Series' GT2 class into one of Penske Racing's LMP2 Porsche RS Spyder prototypes in 2008. Long joined Porsche and Penske LMP2 teammates Timo Bernhard and Romain Dumas for the LMP2-class win and overall runner-up finish at Petit Le Mans in October.

Long has nine ALMS wins in 34 starts and won at least one race in each of the last three seasons. He won the 2005 GT2 champion-ship with Jörg Bergmeister at Petersen Motorsports/ White Lightning Racing. Long also boasts prestigious wins in the 12 Hours of Sebring, Petit Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

"We have had positive discussions so far with Ford concerning the possible purchase of Jaguar/Land Rover and we are now entering a period of more focused and detailed negotiations," a spokesman said in a statement. "We are pleased by the progress in the discussions to date and very positive about the prospects of this business going forward," the statement said.

The statement from Tata said the discussions were complex.

"We hope both parties can reach an agreement in the forthcoming weeks, though these are complex discussions and there is still much work that needs to be done before that position is reached," it said.

Tata is India's leading producer of commercial vehicles and No. 2 in India for passenger cars.

In 2006 it built 580,000 vehicles, of which 54,000 were exported. Acquiring Jaguar Land Rover is part of an ambitious expansion program aimed at making Tata a major player in the global auto industry.

Ford Motor Co. on Thursday told Jaguar and Land Rover workers that it is in "focused negotiations" to sell the brands to India's Tata Motors.

Ford of Europe Chairman Lewis Booth said in a statement: "Ford is committed to focused negotiations at a more detailed level with Tata Motors concerning the potential sale of the combined Jaguar Land Rover business."

Booth added: "We will proceed with further substantive discussions with Tata Motors over the forthcoming weeks with a view to securing an agreement that is in the best interests of all parties concerned."

Ford put Jaguar, a sports-car maker, and Land Rover, which makes SUVs, up for sale in June.

Booth's statement is the first time Ford has revealed the identity of potential buyers for the brands.

Tata will now gain access to more in-depth financial information on the two companies, which will allow it to adjust its eventual offer to Ford.

Tata said on Thursday it was pleased with the progress in talks with Ford.

General Motors has canceled plans to build a new advanced double overhead-cam V8 for its luxury cars.

The move means the future for Cadillac's V8 car engines is unclear.

In January 2007, GM said it would invest $300 million in its Tonawanda, N.Y., engine plant for the new V8 engine, which was scheduled to start production in 2009 and be used in luxury cars.

GM Powertrain spokesman Tom Read said Thursday that the project is dead. That engine likely would have replaced Cadillac's long-running Northstar V8, which is scheduled to end production in 2010.

Cadillac could switch to high-powered V6s in its cars, except for the Corvette-based XLR.

The new direct-injected V6 in the 2008 CTS develops 304 hp, while the current Northstar V8 makes 275 hp in the 2008 DTS.

Cadillac spokesman Kevin Smith said, "We've really seen the V-6 become the predominant engine in sales on the (2008) STS because it's so close in power to the V-8."

He added that the V6 is about 150 to 200 pounds lighter.

The cancellation of the new V8 comes just days after President Bush signed into law new fuel economy standards that call for a 40 percent fuel economy improvement by 2020. The new standards start phasing in in 2011.

The Tonawanda plant still gets at least one new engine, an all-new 4.5-liter diesel V8 engine that starts production in 2010. That engine, GM said earlier, will be used in light pickups and SUVs

The effectiveness of the torque system is obvious immediately; the prototypes we drove were sharper in their actions than the standard X5 that BMW had on hand for comparison. By varying the degree of drive to either the left- or right-hand-side rear wheels, it cornered in a more neutral fashion and with greater purchase from the big Dunlop SP SportMax tires. The system is seamless and fast-acting. You don't notice it transferring the drive, but you do feel the benefit.

Body control is superb, and there are heightened levels of traction and grip. Comparisons with the arguably class-leading Porsche Cayenne will have to wait a few months, but we wouldn't be surprised to see the X6 shoot straight to the top of its class in dynamic prowess.

So, is it time to run out and order one? It's too early to be sure; our drive of the X6 was way too short to indicate with any certainty just how it will perform on the road. Rest assured, though, if you've placed an order on one in the hope of taking delivery of the finest-handling SUV on the market, you're not likely to be disappointed.
