CNN Tests the Phantom & Maybach 57S

CNN may be trying to be all things to all people; indeed their reporter Peter Valdes-Dapena must have enjoyed the "branch out" from stock market reporting to test driving two super luxury cars: the Rolls-Royce Phantom and the Maybach 57S.

Still, I can help but feel that their reporting just fell short of the mark.

It's like that ridiculous MSNBC program: Countdown with Keith Olbermann that does a daily news recap while simultaneously trying vainly to be funny. Judging by the show's ratings, few viewers appreciate the quasi-humor format.

Mr. Valdes-Dapena glibbly commented on the two saloons that both cost north of $350,000. I would not expect the tone of his rhetoric to be reverent, but at the same time, it was all a little haphasard and careless.

The reporter's opening line proclaimed, "you may never have the opportunity to peel out and smoke the rear tires on a $350,000 Rolls Royce Phantom, but if you ever get the chance, here's how."

I think you can guess what happened next.

Mr. Valdes-Dapena's reporting was sound - but it lacked the true ring of a car enthusiast - or someone who even bothers to think of cars other than "my Toyota's gotta go to the dealer again for an oil change."

I leave you, dear reader, to pass judgement. I've already cast my verdict: CNN Money should stick with the financial news.
