Raising the Standard: Bentley's New Azure

The Bentley Azure Convertible of 2006 constitutes Bentley's balanced approach to its clients.

There are two branches of the Bentley family today that represent this balance: the bold and the conservative. The bold is defined by the exciting traits of the popular 199mph Continental GT that includes many Bentley traditions in its design, but is not restrained by them and has succeeded in forging new territory for the marque.

The conservative is characterized by the continued production of grand classics such as the Arnage that have embodied the company's design values when it was tied to Rolls-Royce. Conservative loyalists should doubtless be pleased.

The new Azure represents the Conservative strand of Bentley DNA. It is, in effect, the old award winning Azure Convertible modernized, tightened, and reengineered for better performance- though on an Arnage platform. Bentley has compromized none of the refinement of the old car. In short, this convertible may well set the tone for all grand touring cars into the next decade.

One question: why not produce the car with the traditonal Flying B instead of the badge as was first revealed in the prototype? A small point to this otherwise fabulous car.

I can't wait. I'll take two please.
