The Banal Lexus LS

Rarely has Lexus produced anything that breaks the mold in the luxury automobile segment. Lexus' style continues to be at best mainstream and owe much to BMW and Mercedes-Benz designs.

Where Lexus continues to excel (and outscore the Germans) is in the quality of construction and the ergonomic layout of the interiors of their cars. Still, none of these good facets translate to passion, charisma, or design originality.

The new LS is a sad byproduct of the malaise that is emanating from German design. The “deck-lid” trunk is clearly borrowed from the unfortunate looking 7-Series; the “hockey-stick” rear window curve and funky roof antenna, also borrowed BMW traits.

Lexus could have done better by its flagship sedan.
