BMW designer Pierre Leclerq worked the styling to differentiate the X6 from the X5. Despite similarities to the X5 in the front and tall sides, every exterior panel is unique to the X6. The sloping roofline really provides it with its own distinctive identity. It angles down quite dramatically aft of the B-pillar in a manner that has prompted BMW to bill the four-door X6 as a Sport Activity Coupe rather than a Sport Activity Vehicle, as it does with the more conventional X5. Overall, the X6 is about one inch longer and two inches wider than the X5.nside, there's a sumptuously designed cabin based heavily on the X5, with a high-mounted dashboard and a broad center tunnel. The roof's curvature means there's no room for a third row of seats, leaving the new BMW with a reasonable 25.6 cubic feet of luggage capacity, rising to 59.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Safety is a big issue. The X6 gets front, side and curtain airbags, crash-activated headrests up front, bixenon headlamps and two-stage brake lamps. Added to this is a raft of driving aids, including the obligatory antilock brakes and a switchable dynamic stability control system.
